Stormwater Drains Rathmines
Stormwater drains in Rathmines take rain from your roof and paving out to the kerb, and once a grate silts up or a pipe chokes, the water sits in the garden instead. We open grates, pits and storm pipes with a jetter and film the pipe once it runs.
Clearing methods for every kind of drain are compared on the blocked drains hub, and other work is on the plumber in Rathmines home page.

Why Do Stormwater Lines Fail Near the Lake?
The ground and the street layout set the problem up before a single leaf falls:
- Silt, sand and leaf litter washing into surface grates on the low blocks
- Feeder roots entering old clay joints, then catching debris as it passes
- A water table close to the surface near the foreshore, leaving the line almost no head to push water through
- Yard drains laid on gentle grades, where water travels slowly even on a good day
Any one of those alone can be handled. Put two together and the lowest garden goes under in a heavy storm.
Stormwater or a Blocked Sewer?
The signs live in different places, and reading them wrong sends the wrong truck:
- Stormwater shows as pooling around grates, water sitting in the yard hours after rain stops, and downpipes that gurgle or hold water
- A blocked sewer shows as gurgling fixtures inside the house, a gully surcharging while the washing machine runs, and a sour smell near the yard trap
If the signs point to the sewer, the blocked sewer page covers that work.
How We Open a Stormwater Line
A storm line is opened from the lowest point up:
- 01
The closest pit or grate comes up, and the standing water in it shows how much of the pipe is backed up.
- 02
Where the reason is not obvious, a drain camera is fed in to show silt, roots or a broken length.
- 03
The jetter flushes the storm pipe out, or the electric eel cuts through where the jet head cannot pass.
- 04
A final camera pass confirms water now runs the full length and records the state of the pipe.
That last step is where the CCTV drain inspection work earns its place, because a line that blocks once will block again if a cracked joint is left behind.
What Sets the Price of a Stormwater Clear?
We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.
Four things shape the number:
- Distance from the closest pit to the choke
- Old clay stormwater pipe needs a lower-pressure pass than PVC
- Roots to cut as well as silt to flush
- A storm-night call at the after-hours rate, agreed first

What Customers Say
[The team] have done an outstanding job at my mother's rental property. The area they worked on was particularly challenging, as it retained water and had become extremely muddy and boggy… The transformation has been remarkable.
When We're Not the Right Call
Council kerb pits and the public drains in the street are outside your property and not ours to clear; the council looks after those. If water is arriving overland from a neighbour's block rather than through your own line, a civil contractor is better placed to solve it.

Four Stormwater Questions
Why does rain pond in my garden before it reaches the lake?
Yards near the shore have very little fall, so water that cannot get into a choked grate simply sits. When heavy storm cells deliver their rain in minutes, a partly blocked storm pipe overflows at the lowest point long before the rain eases.
Can a stormwater line be camera-checked in Rathmines?
Yes. The drain camera used on sewers goes up a storm pipe from the closest pit, showing silt, a broken length or roots at a joint. You watch the screen with the plumber before any repair is priced.
Is a blocked stormwater drain an emergency?
It can become one. Water pooling against the house, or a gully lid lifting near the footings, deserves urgent attention on low ground where it will not soak away. Ring and describe what you can see.
Do tree roots get into stormwater pipes as well as sewers?
They do, particularly where a storm pipe runs under mature gardens and meets old clay joints. Roots chase moisture in either kind of pipe. The camera confirms it, and cutting them out is explained under tree root removal.
