Bush On One Side, The Lake Below

Ground that steps and shifts

These blocks descend from the Awaba bushland toward the lake, and the reactive clay and shale beneath them swell and shrink with the seasons. Retaining walls on the stepped sites take on seepage, so yard drains have to be graded to suit the fall.

Pipe from the first builds

Some of the earliest weatherboard and fibro homes still draw water through galvanised steel lines that have been quietly rusting beneath the floor for decades. Along Haslemere Crescent and nearby, hot water units dating from the original builds are still in service.

Runoff off the bush edge

In a heavy fall, water off the forested Awaba side moves across these lots faster than the kerb pits can collect it, and the low-side gullies toward the foreshore back up first.

At the last census, 1,204 people lived in 430 homes here, and 97.9 per cent are separate houses, with 51.4 per cent carrying four bedrooms or more. It is a family suburb of long-held homes, which means the plumbing in most of them has had years to age.

Questions From Buttaba Households

Do the bush blocks on the Awaba side make blocked drains worse here?

They can. Eucalypts along the rear boundaries send roots into ageing sewer joints, and the reactive clay under these streets moves with the seasons, opening cracks in the earthenware runs. The camera pass after a clear shows what state the pipe is in and whether the roots will return through the same joint.

Can an original hot water unit in an older fibro house be swapped for one that costs less to run?

Yes. Plenty of the 1960s to 1980s homes here still run the tank from the build era, and a changeover to a heat pump or gas system trims the running costs. The old steel line beneath the floor gets checked at the same time, since a rusted run restricts flow to the new unit.
